LETTER:   All potential detasselers who have completed an application will be sent a letter a few days before detasseling starts with bus pickup locations and approximate start date.

CREWLEADERS:  These individuals are normally 15 or older and have detasseled at S&G Service’s the previous two years.  They are selected by the Supervisor on their leadership abilities.

ROGUERS:  These individuals work earlier in the summer roguing and must provide their own transportation to work.

TRANSPORTATION:  Transportation for detasselers will be provided from various pickup points to S&G Services.  We reserve the right to deny transportation to any individual who fails to follow the rules set forth by the bus driver.  If you drive to work, S&G Services will not be responsible for any damage or theft of the vehicle or its contents.  If you drive or are driven to S&G Services for work, you must arrive by the designated arrival time to be able to work.  This time is usually 6:30 a.m.

WAGES:   You will be paid on an hourly basis from the time you enter the field until you leave it, to the nearest ¼ hour.  You will be paid regular pay on all days except Sundays which will be at “time-and-a-half”.  The incentive bonus plan for those working consecutive years will be given to crewleaders and individuals who have detasseled for us in previous years.  Paychecks are processed weekly and will be distributed at the end of the work week after the work day is completed to those in attendance. Paychecks are processed weekly and will be distributed at the end of the work week after the work day is completed only to detasselers at work. Your paycheck will be mailed on payday if the payday doesn't fall on a work day or if you are not at work on payday. No advances will be given.

WORK HOURS:  Hours worked vary upon the weather, the work that needs to be done, the number of detasselers, etc.  If the weather is excessively hot we may quit for the day after lunch.  However, on a typical work day we will be in the fields until 2:30 - 3:00 p.m.

WHAT TO WEAR:  What you wear depends on the individual.  Some workers wear shorts and sleeveless tops to stay cool, while others wear long pants and long-sleeved shirts to avoid the sun and possible cuts from corn leaves.  Remember that temperatures can vary considerably from early morning to afternoon.  Sunscreen is a good idea.    You should also have some type of covering in the event of  rain (you may work through rain unless it is also lightning).

WATER:  Water will be provided in the fields.  Only water persons are allowed to operate the water hydrants.  A plastic cup will be given to you on your first day of work which you will be responsible to bring with you to work.  If you lose this cup, another one will be provided to you at a nominal charge or you can bring your own cup.  There will be no drinking of water directly from the water containers.

LUNCH:  Each worker should bring lunch in a container marked with worker’s name.  Care should be taken not to bring highly perishable items.  Soft drinks are available for 50¢ a can.

RESTROOM FACILITIES:   Port-a-Potties will be in the fields, as well as rest rooms at plant.

TELEPHONE:  A phone is available for those who want to call and let their rides know what time to expect the buses back at the pickup points.  (Long distance calls must be made collect or on a calling card).

CONDUCT AND DISMISSAL:  No smoking will be allowed except in the fields and then only if it does not hinder your work.  You are not allowed to bring knives to work.  Anyone caught with a knife will be automatically dismissed and/or knife confiscated.  No wrestling or arm wrestling will be allowed.  Throwing anything at any time (tassels, dirt clods, hats, soft drink cans, etc.) is not allowed.  Anyone caught doing these things by a crewleader and/or a field supervisor will be automatically dismissed, no questions asked!  If you are found with any controlled substances or alcohol, you will be immediately dismissed and reported to the  appropriate state and local authorities.  Lack of productivity or failure to follow instructions can also be grounds for dismissal.

Dismissal  Questions:  Parent/Guardian if your child is dismissed for any of the above reasons, or for something else, and you would like to speak to detasseling supervisor,
(who will be in the field and unavailable during the work day),  phone S&G Service’s office at (812)663-6899, leave your name, number and name of child and they will have the supervisor contact you when he is finished with the work day, if possible, or the next day.

QUITTING:  If you quit for any reason, except for sickness or being dismissed, before completing 4 total hours of work during one day, you will not be paid for work completed that day and you may not return to work for the remainder of the year.  If you miss a day, you can return to work unless told otherwise.

ILLNESS: If you become ill in the field, tell your crewleader at once.  You may not leave your crew without your crewleader’s permission.    A ride will be provided to take you back to office and you may call someone to pick you up or you may wait for the bus.   You must also sign the “Sign-Out” sheet in office stating why you left field, etc.

LEAVE OF ABSENCE:  If you need to be gone for a doctor or dentist appointment, vacation, 4-H, or school activity please inform your crewleader in advance so scheduling can be arranged.

SAFETY:  Don’t climb fences or gates without the crewleader’s permission.  You will be required to work in various weather conditions, rain and shine.  If the field supervisors decide there is danger from lightning, the crews will be removed from the fields.  Workers are covered by Workman’s Compensation Insurance on the job while working.

TIME SHEETS:  Before leaving time sheets are completed by crewleader and you are required to sign this sheet if you wish to be paid.
